Here we are at the end of another calendar year. This is a year that has definitely had its highs and lows for New Zealand and the world as well as for Rod, Chris and I. New babies in the mix for some of us, overseas travel for some of us, renovations, health challenges, and all the uncertainty and stress and funding and employment worries within our social service, youth work and government sectors. Amongst all of this the three of us have been privileged to each continue in robust and honest supervision conversations with a variety of people. It is safe to say we all still love this work, even when our personal circumstance or the wider context add to the complexity or challenge.

As we approach the Christmas and summer holiday season we would be remiss if we did not send a word of reminder or encouragement to get submissions in for the Treaty Principles Bill, as the 6 January deadline is nearly upon us. Many of you may have had the opportunity to engage and take part in the Hikoi, in Wellington or around the country. What a great symbolic stand and demonstration of kotahitanga as such a diverse community came together; to stand with Tangata Whenua and show we seek to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi and not be diverted by talk of equality which further erodes Indigenous rights in New Zealand.  Perhaps if you have already completed your submission you can see if you have in your circle any of the 39% who feel undecided or feel they don’t know enough about the Bill and support them to understand it more.  Anyway before I get on my soapbox again, do remember to make a submission and show the Select Committee what you think.

And finally, at this time of year The Project team wish you all a joyful season, and one filled with what you need it to be filled with, whether that be work, whānau, adventure, rest, solitude or anything else that fills your cup at this time of year. It will be family filled time for all of us.

Mā te wā,

Karen (and on behalf of Rod and Chris)
